A WIDOW broke down in tears after “disrespectful” diggers dumped a huge pile of dirt at her husband’s mercy.

Father of five, Roy Thompson, died last month aged 88 and is buried in Southern Cemetery in Chorlton, Manchester.

Roy Thompson died at the age of 88 from complications from cancer.

The flowers and memorabilia after they have been removed from the property.

No tombstone had yet been erected at his resting place, but friends and family had adorned the site with flowers and reminders of his life.

But when his grieving wife Beverly arrived to celebrate her birthday on Thursday morning, they discovered the grave buried under a giant mound of earth.

Beverly was in tears and in shock – but the Southern Cemetery office says what happened was “legal and commonplace”.

Mr Thompson’s son Anthony, 55, from London, told MEN: “It’s quite insensitive and quite disrespectful. You just assume no one shows up.

“There are memorabilia and flowers that have just been moved to another grave.

“My father is buried under the pile of dirt, but the flowers and nameplate are placed in front of another property, giving the impression that my father is buried there.

“Anyone who visited my father and didn’t attend the funeral would think he was buried here. It’s very disappointing and annoying. The floor could have been taken somewhere else.”

Anthony is now urging the council to reconsider its policy.

He added: “It’s not about whether it’s legal. I find it disrespectful and insensitive.”

A spokesman for Manchester City Council said: “The council’s funeral service team is doing its utmost to respect nearby graves when excavations are carried out.

“In some cases, spoil is placed on neighboring graves during this process, but staff carry out their duties with care at all times and do their best not to disturb the original grave site.”
