Valentina lay in the hospital on call. It was her turn to work the night shift when suddenly the alarms went off. She looked out the window and knew there was no time to lose.
The story you will see below happened in Chile just a few months ago. The person who wrote to us told us about an experience in her life. This is undoubtedly a sad story that could happen to any human being. In 1995, Valentina was just a teenager in her last year of high school. At that time, she had fallen in love with a boy, but unfortunately she used him and went abroad with her family.
Two months after the relationship ended in the middle of the school year, she suspected she was pregnant. She was very worried. She was in a situation she never thought she would be in to begin with. She didn't know what to do. She didn't even know how to tell her parents.
In fact, they were very strict confessing. This was not a good idea, but there was no way to hide something like this. They were going to find out sooner or later. Valentina only told a friend of hers, Are you sure you're pregnant? I don't know.
I didn't do a test, but I feel very strange. I'll get you a pregnancy test. A day later, the friend brought her that test. Valentina prayed that it was all a false alarm and nothing more. But it was not.
Her result was positive. That day, she did not know whether to be happy or sad. She walked down the street of the city of Valdivia, aimlessly in crime. But suddenly she felt the strength and said to herself, I will have to face this and I'm going to have this little one. Finally she arrived home.
Her mother was in the living room watching TV. You just got home. Where have you been? You should have been here at 02:00 p.m.. It's already 07:00 p.m..
Mom, said Valentina, crying. But what's wrong, mom? I'm pregnant. Valentina remembers that her mother came up to her and slapped her. Don't play with this, Valentina.
You know I don't like bad taste jokes. She told her that she wasn't joking. At that moment, the door was heard to open. It was her father. What's going on here?
Your daughter says she's expecting a child. What is it? But what are they saying? Is it true what your mother says? Daughter?
Dad, I didn't think this would happen. Valentina remembers how her parents got angry that day and told her that the best thing to do was to have an abortion. Tomorrow you will come with me. You're a disgrace to the family with the words that 16 year old girl heard. And so it was the next day her mother woke Valentina up.
It was early in the morning and they took a bus. Mom, where are we going? She asked, scared. She remembers that it was a very bad moon it was raining and very cold. After a two hour ride, they arrived at a small town called Los Lagos.
Mum, what are we doing here? Don't ask. You know you're too young to be taking care of a child. You're going to get it over with for good. Mom, you're scaring me.
I don't want to. Please let's go or I promise you it's going away on you. They entered a house. There was a guy who apparently was a doctor. Valentina tells that she looked at some diplomas in which it said that he was graduated in medicine.
He was an older man. He told her, don't be afraid. I'm just going to examine. He went to what was a small office and doctor, said the mother, it's possible to begin with. It is possible.
But there's something you should know. It is very dangerous to have an abortion. She is just a young girl. It is likely that when she has an abortion, she could become sterile, that she will never be able to have children again. It is recommended that she keep the baby, give birth and give it up for adoption.
No, doctor, we don't want people to find out. Do it. Does she want it to? Willa is going to want to, right, Valentina? The teenager simply looked down.
It was obvious she was being forced. The doctor simply said, I won't. Maybe if I had had more children. But she's just a teenager. I don't want to carry that weight on my conscience.
My opinion is to give it up for adoption. They returned home. It was as if fate had been in Valentina's favor and she felt very sad to know how her parents were acting. When they arrived home, her parents talked to her and told her, you're going to have that baby, but after it's born, you will have to give it up for adoption. Finally, time passed.
Eight months and two weeks to be exact. Valentina lay in the hospital giving birth. Fortunately, everything went well. It's a beautiful baby, said the nurse. Valentina asked to see her son.
The girl saw him, but only for a moment. Her mother soon appeared and made her sign a paper saying that she was giving up her maiden. I remember my mom came with a paper. She told me to sign it. I knew what it was and I refused.
But she told me, if you don't do it, you won't enter the house anymore. Don't worry, he will be fine. I didn't want to do it, but I didn't want my son to suffer because of me. I mean, I thought it would be a better place for both of us. I signed it and never saw him again.
The only thing I remember was that mole on his skin, which I also have. My mother took care of all the paperwork to separate me from my son, from her own grandson. Valentina went into a deep depression and no matter how hard she tried to do something to reunite with her son. She did not succeed. She didn't even know where he was taken and she had no information.
Valentina remembers her father telling her, from now on, things are going to change. If you make the same mistake, you will leave home and we will not pay for your studies. You must grow up and start from scratch. Your son will be fine. You must move on.
You will be someone in life. You must be grateful since you are not going to be cleaning diapers and giving your only life to a bastard. And so time passed. Valentina learned to move on. She started College and finished with honors.
She even got a scholarship to study for a master's degree. She had studied medicine. Of course, there were times when she thought about that son. She wondered, will he be well? What will he be doing now?
Will he be near or far away? Sometimes she thought about looking for him, but she was afraid of what would happen. On many occasions, she was on the verge of doing so. After finishing her career and getting a job in a hospital in the capital, she got married and had a daughter. She never told her husband about her past.
She didn't want him to know everything she had to go through, so she was fine. They were a happy family, or at least that's how it seemed. However, one day, after a few years, something very unexpected happened. It was the winter of 2019. Valentina had arrived at the hospital to work as usual.
It was 02:00 in the morning when suddenly she heard the phone ring. An emergency patient arrived. We need you to come to the surgery room. At that moment, Valentino looked out the window and felt something very strange. He saw how the paramedics were carrying someone injured.
It was the first time she felt a very strong fear. So she rushed to the scene where they told him, Poor guy has been run over. We must act immediately. At that instant, Valentina approached the young man, and just at that moment, when she saw that strange feeling became bigger. She felt that time was standing still, but that time was gold.
So she acted immediately. The boy had a bare chest, and when she saw him, she noticed a mole on his skin that seemed familiar to her. She also had it, and it had a great resemblance to her father. Luckily, that young man resisted the operation, but he was still under observation. The doctor stayed with him for a while longer, but then she was called to see another patient.
Then Valentina asked for the young man's name. She wanted to know more about him. And amazing as it seemed, the boy had her same last name. So she entered the hospital's computer and there she discovered in the file that the young man had visited the facility before and that he was from an orphanage. The whole thing was really surprising for the woman who undoubtedly could not believe it.
Valentina remembers that moment as if it were yesterday. I went into the computer and searched if there were any records about him and found many things. Since I work in a state hospital, I was able to access that information. I was shaking. It was clear that he was my son.
That similarity with my father, that mole on his skin. Besides, he lived in an orphanage. Who else could he be? It was as if fate had put him in front of me. I didn't know whether to cry or laugh.
I was in front of my son, and I didn't want him to be here in the hospital in that condition. But if life gave me one more chance, I would take advantage of it, I thought, and I would do everything I could to remedy the situation. I would ask for forgiveness over and over again for all the wrong I did. It was only a short time before the end of my shift. I wanted to see him again and be by his side.
So I went back. A nurse had come out of there, out of the intensive care Ward where he was. She just told me the patient just passed away. He didn't make it. I couldn't believe it.
I opened the door and went in. There were some colleagues there with some resuscitation devices next to me, and I just looked at how my son was lifeless. A doctor came up to me and said, Poor guy. He didn't resist. He was from an orphanage.
He had no parents or siblings. Who will cry for him? At that moment, I staggered and almost fainted. But I grabbed hold of a table next to me. I heard those words and saw him.
Who will cry for him? At that moment, I was left alone with that young man, and I cried like never before because that young man was my son. Then I found out that the guy who ran him over ran away. It turned out that he was celebrating his College graduation, had too much to drink, and apparently didn't notice the oncoming car. On the one hand, I also learned that my suspicions were true.
He lived until he was 18 years old in a hostel in the north of the country. Then he came to the capital to study. The state supported him with the University. He was a good boy. He had good grades and a whole life ahead of him.
But his life ended. Maybe if she had not given him up for adoption, he would have been happier and would not have gone through this. He died at the age of 24. Since that happened, I never spoke about my parents again. In fact, I always felt resentment for them.
They're very old now, but I can't see them again, and I don't know if I'm doing the right thing. They took away part of my life. They took away my illusion of being a mother when I had to be the one. I also felt guilt. I should have been stronger.
Who knows how many times he needed me. Who knows how many times he cried and wondered why I abandoned him. Maybe he wanted to look for me. Maybe he knew about me. I don't know.
We had the same last name. It was easy to find each other. But I didn't. And now there's no going back. There's no time machine to climb in, to go back in time and tell him how much I love him.
His life ended as well as mine. Even though I have a daughter and a husband, nothing is like before. And I feel so guilty. And that is how Valentina ended her story. A story that could have had another course, another ending.
Maybe a better one. Undoubtedly. Sometimes life gives us surprises at the most unexpected moment nowadays. Many parents punish their children when they make mistakes. And that is wrong.
A mistake should not be punished because one is human. And many times we get carried away by the moment, whatever it is. What the parents should have done from the beginning was to support her. Because now they not only manage to push their grandson away, but also their daughter.
