++ This Mother Was Arrested For Stealing Groceries, Then Police Saw That Her Kids Hadn’t Eaten In Days

In late 2017, two North Carolina police officers were faced with what seemed like a routine case, but little did they know it would turn out to be a life-changing experience. It all started with a report of a theft from a store in Hillsboro, North Carolina. A local woman had been caught on camera stealing groceries from a supermarket, and the officers were called in to investigate. But as they delved deeper into the case, they realized that this was no ordinary theft.

On November 4th 2017, staff at the local Food Lion grocery chain spotted the female shoplifter taking food off the shelves and leaving the store without paying. The manager gave chase and followed the perpetrator out to the store's parking lot, where she got into a gray Pontiac Vive and sped away. But the manager was able to get the license plate number, and quickly informed the cops.

With Hillsborough being a small community, the officers knew they had a good chance of finding the thief. And indeed, they were able to use the license plate number to access the owner's driving license details, which revealed the shoplifter's photo. The officers then compared it to the image caught on the Food Lion security cameras, and they knew they had their woman: Teresa West.

The officers drove to West's house in the southeast of Hillsborough, and while they didn't put on their siren, West knew they were coming. She watched as the patrol car drove down the street. It was a case that may have seemed small, but it had a profound impact on the officers, as they realized the true impact of their actions."

As the officers knocked on West's door, they were prepared for the worst, but what they found inside shocked them to their core. West, a disabled single mother of two, admitted to stealing the groceries out of desperation to feed her family. The officers found that West and her family hadn't eaten in three days and her cupboards were bare. The officers felt a mix of sadness and guilt, knowing that they were about to arrest someone who was just trying to feed her family.

West was taken to the Hillsboro Police Department HQ, where she was charged with shoplifting and made to face the local magistrate. However, the magistrate was moved by West's situation and released her on unsecured bail of $500.

Feeling a sense of responsibility to help West and her family, the officers, Bradshaw and Spraggins, went above and beyond their duty. They reached out to local charities and churches, but due to the timing, they were unable to help. Determined to make a difference, the officers decided to buy groceries for West and her family with their own money. They spent $140 on groceries, filling West's cupboards and fridge with fruits, vegetables, meats, and even some soft drinks for the kids. The officers' actions not only helped West and her family, but they also restored their faith in humanity and the impact they can have in their community.

When West returned home from her hearing with the magistrate, she was in for a surprise. She was overwhelmed with emotion when she saw the groceries that Bradshaw and Spraggins had bought for her family. She thanked them repeatedly, saying that it was like an act of God. The kindness of the officers did not go unnoticed, as their actions were praised by the Hillsboro Police Department. Lieutenant Dandy Simmons, the chief of Hillsboro Police, even posted about it on the department's official Facebook page, which earned thousands of positive reactions.

Lieutenant Simmons said that this kind of kindness and compassion is all part of the job. He believes that policing is about partnership and that sometimes, police work is not cut and dry, it's about putting people first and cops second. The post encouraged readers who wanted to help West and her family to donate goods or cash to local food banks.

The post also picked up a lot of media attention, and Lieutenant Davis Trimmer, Hillsboro Police Patrol Commander, spoke to reporters from ABC News. He said that they had an overwhelming outpouring of offers to help West as a result of the post, and they were directing all offers to local food banks. West has received help and will be directed to programs that are local that can assist her in the future.

Unfortunately, West's story is not an isolated case. North Carolina is one of the most impoverished parts of the U.S, and things seem to be getting worse. According to the food bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina, almost 60,000 individuals a week are given food handouts in this region, and about 50 percent of these food recipients are either senior citizens or children.

While West's story had an uplifting ending in this particular chapter, her story is not over yet. She is still facing criminal charges for her shoplifting episode, but she is contrite about her crime and has offered an apology. She said that she had to steal food because her kids were hungry.

In any case, Bradshaw and Spraggins should be applauded for their generosity. In a modern America where sometimes the job of the police is to protect and serve, they have shown that they are willing to go above and beyond their duty to help those in need.
